INTRODUCTION

Republic of Macedonia with an area of 25,333 square kilometers is located in the southeast of Europe, surrounded by Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Greece and Bulgaria. From total of area land is 24.856 km², and water is 477 km² or 2% of the territory of country.

Macedonia gained its independence peacefully from Yugoslavia in 1991. Greek objection to Macedonia’s name, insisting it implies territorial pretensions to the northern Greek province of the same name, and democratic backsliding have stalled the country’s movement toward Euro-Atlantic integration. Immediately after Macedonia declared independence, Greece sought to block Macedonian efforts to gain UN membership if the name “Macedonia” was used. Macedonia was eventually admitted to the UN in 1993 as “The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia,” and at the same time it agreed to UN-sponsored negotiations on the name dispute. In 1995, Greece lifted a 20-month trade embargo and the two countries agreed to normalize relations, but the issue of the name remained unresolved and negotiations for a solution are ongoing. Since 2004, the US and over 130 other nations have recognized Macedonia by its constitutional name, Republic of Macedonia.

According to the last data there are 2,071,278 residents. Macedonians are in the majority (66%), followed by Albanians, Turks, Roma and Serbs. Population density is 81 / km².
Eastern Orthodoxy is the majority faith of the Republic of Macedonia, making up 65% of the population, the vast majority of whom belong to the Macedonian Orthodox Church. Various other Christian denominations account for 0.4% of the population. Muslims constitute 33.3% of the population. Macedonia has the fifth-highest proportion of Muslims in Europe, after those of Kosovo (96%), Turkey (90%),  Albania (59%) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (51%).  Most Muslims are AlbaniansTurks, or Romani, although few are Macedonian Muslims. The remaining 1.4% was determined to be “unaffiliated” by a 2010 Pew Research estimation.

The capital city is Skopje, which represents the economic, cultural and industrial center of Macedonia. Skopje is located on the upper course of the Vardar River, and is located on a major north-south Balkan route between Belgrade and Athens. It is a center for metal-processing, chemical, timber, textile, leather, and printing industries. Industrial development of the city has been accompanied by development of the trade, logistics, and banking sectors, as well as an emphasis on the fields of transportation, culture and sport.  From larger cities stand out Kumanovo, Bitola, Prilep, Tetovo, Gostivar and Ohrid.

In Macedonia climate is sub-Mediterranean characteristic by hot and dry summers and cold and wet winters. Macedonia is one of countries with most of mountains and mountain peaks, and the peaks of 34 mountains are not lower than 2000 meters above sea level. The highest mountain is Korab whose peak reaches 2,764 meters.

Macedonia is a major transportation corridor from Western and Central Europe to the Aegean Sea and Southern Europe to Western Europe.

When it comes to the rivers Vardar stends out and it flows through 90% of the territory of Macedonia, including Skopje. When it comes to tourism, the most attention is paid to the offer for natural lakes and ski resorts.

UNESCO included Lake Ohrid in World Heritage List and it is one of the oldest and deepest lake in Europe. Its maximum depth is 288 meters, according to estimates is around four million years ago and it has about 200 endemic species.

The official language is Macedonian, but also are spoken Albanian and Turkish. The currency is the Macedonian denar.

Macedonia is a member of the UN and of the Council of Europe. Since 2005 it has also been a candidate for joining the European Union and has applied for NATO membership. Although one of the poorest countries in Europe, Macedonia has made significant progress in developing an open, market based economy.

The Republic of Macedonia is a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights and the U.N. Geneva Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and Convention against Torture, and the Constitution guarantees basic human rights to all Macedonian citizens.

The Macedonian Armed Forces comprise the army, air force and Special Forces. The government’s national defence policy aims to guarantee the preservation of the independence and sovereignty of the state, the integrity of its land area and airspace and its constitutional order. Its main goals remain the development and maintenance of a credible capability to defend the nation’s vital interests and development of the Armed Forces in a way that ensures their interoperability with the armed forces of NATO and the European Union member states and their capability to participate in the full range of NATO missions.

Macedonia’s statistical regions exist solely for legal and statistical purposes. The regions are: Eastern, Northeastern, Pelagonia, Polog, Skopje, Southeastern,Southwestern, Vardar.

In August 2004, the Republic of Macedonia was reorganised into 84 municipalities (opštini; sing. opština); 10 of the municipalities constitute the City of Skopje, a distinct unit of local self-government and the country’s capital.

Most of the current municipalities were unaltered or merely amalgamated from the previous 123 municipalities established in September 1996; others were consolidated and their borders changed. Prior to this, local government was organised into 34 administrative districts, communes, or counties.

Natural resources of Macedonia are: Low-grade iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, chromite, manganese, nickel, tungsten, gold, silver, asbestos, gypsum, timber, arable land.
Agriculture products are: Grapes, wine, tobacco, vegetables; milk, eggs.

The currency is the Macedonian denar.

GEOGRAPHY/TERITORY

Destination Macedonia is mountainous landlocked country on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe. It is bordered by AlbaniaBulgariaGreeceSerbia and Kosovo. The country was formerly a Republic within Yugoslavia, it gained independence in 1991. The country has some 766 km of boundaries, shared with Kosovo (159 km or 99 mi) to the northwest, Serbia (62 km or 39 mi) to the North, Bulgaria (148 km) to the east, Greece (246 km) to the south, and Albania (151 km) to the west.

Due to an ongoing dispute with Greece about the use of the name of Macedonia (the bordering northern region of Greece is also known as Macedonia), the country is now known as the ‘Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’ or short FYROM or Republic of Macedonia. The small nation covers only a part of the larger historical and geographical area known as Macedonia. Its culture and lifestyle has Ottoman and European influences.

Macedonia covers an area of 25,713 km², compared it is about two-third the size of Switzerland, or slightly larger than the U.S. state of Vermont. Macedonia is situated in a mountainous part of the Balkans, it is bisected from north west to south east by the Vardar River (also known as Axios river), the major river in the country and its longest. Highest point with 2,764 m is Golem Korab (Maja e Korabit; Mount Korab) a mountain situated on the border with Albania, it is the highest peak in both countries.
Skopje is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Macedonia. It is the country’s political, cultural, economic, and academic center. It was known in the Romanperiod under the name Scupi. Skopje is located in the north of the Republic of Macedonia, in the center of the Balkan peninsula, and halfway between Belgrade and Athens. The city is built in the Skopje valley, oriented on a west-east axis, along the course of the Vardar river, which flows into the Aegean Sea in Greece. The valley is approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) wide and it is limited by several mountain ranges to the North and South. These ranges limit the urban expansion of Skopje, which spreads along the Vardar and the Serava, a small river which comes from the North. In its administrative boundaries, the City of Skopje stretches for more than 33 kilometres (21 miles), but it is only 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) wide.

Skopje is approximately 245m above sea level and covers 571.46 km2. The urbanised area only covers 337 km2, with a density of 65 inhabitants per hectare. Skopje, in its administrative limits, encompasses many villages and other settlements, including DračevoGorno Nerezi and Bardovci.

CLIMATE

Macedonia’s climate features hot summers and cold winters. May-October is an excellent time to visit, as it’s the warmest and driest part of the year. Average monthly temperature in the summer is 73 F/23 C, but a sweater may be needed in the evenings. Fall tends to be dry in the country. The winters are very cold (average monthly temperature is 35 F/2 C), often drizzly, snowy and windy, especially in the interior and the north. Snowfalls can be heavy in winter, which can cause travel delays.

The average yearly rainfall in the areas with changed mediteranean climate is fairly low. The average yearly rainfall by the Vardar river is less than 500 mm., and it is one of the driest regions in the country. In the other areas of the changed mediteranean climate the average rainfall is 600-750 mm. Snowfall is very rare for these areas.

HIDROLOGY

In the Republic of Macedonia there are 1,100 larger sources of water. The rivers flow into three different basins: the Aegean, the Adriatic and that Black Sea basin.

The Aegean basin is the largest. It covers 87% of the territory of the Republic, which is 22,075 km. sq. Vardar, the largest river in this basin, drains 80% of the territory or 20,459 km. sq. Its valley plays an important part in the economy and the communication system of the country. The project named The Vardar Valley is considered to be crucial for the strategic development of the country.

The river Black Drim) forms the Adriatic basin, which covers an area of about 3,320 km. sq., i. e. 13% of the territory. It issues from Lakes Prespa and Ohrid.

Lake Ohrid (Macedonian: Охридско Езеро, Ohridsko Ezero) straddles the mountainous border between the southwestern Republic of Macedonia and eastern Albania. Lake Ohrid is the deepest lake of the Balkans, with a maximum depth of 288 m (940 ft) and a mean depth of 155 m (508 ft). It covers an area of 358 km2 (138 sq mi), containing an estimated 55.4 km³ of water. It is 30.4 km long by 14.8 km wide at its maximum extent with a shoreline length of 87.53 km, shared between the Republic of Macedonia (56.02 km) and Albania (31.51 km). The lake drains an area of around 2600 km² and is fed primarily by underground springs on the eastern shore (about 50% of total inflow), with roughly 25% shares from rivers and direct precipitation.

There are three cities on the lake’s shores: Ohrid and Struga on the Macedonian side; Pogradec in Albania. There are also several fishing villages, although tourism is now a more significant part of their income. The catchment area of the lake has a population of around 170,000 people, with 131,000 people living directly at the lake shore (43,000 in Albania and 88,000 in the Republic of Macedonia).

The Great Prespa Lake (Macedonian: Преспанско Езеро, Prespansko Ezero) is divided between Albania, Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. The biggest island in the Great Prespa Lake, on the Republic of Macedonia’s side, is called Golem Grad (“Large Fortress”), or Snake Island (Змиски Остров). The other island Mal Grad (“Small Fortress”, in Albania) is the site of a ruined 14th century monastery dedicated to St. Peter. Today, both islands are uninhabited.

Because Great Prespa Lake sits about 150m above Lake Ohrid, which lies only about 10 km (6.2 mi) to the west, its waters run through underground channels in the karst and emerge from springs which feed streams running into Lake Ohrid.

Dojran Lake, located in southeastern Macedonia, is the smallest of the three major lakes with an area of 42.7 km². It is shared between the Republic of Macedonia (27.1 km²) and Greece (15.6 km²). The town of Dojran is situated on the west coast of the lake, while the Greek village of Mouries lies to the east. To the north is the mountain Belasica and to the south is the Greek town of Doirani. The lake is round in shape, has a maximum depth of 10 metres, has a north-to-south length of 8.9 km, and is 7.1 km at its widest.

POPULATION

According to the data from the last Census of Population, Households and Dwellings in 2002 (State Statistical Office of the Republic of Macedonia), the Republic of Macedonia had 2.022.547 inhabitants, which is 3.9% more compared with the Census in 1994 and 43% more compared with the Census in 1948. According to population estimates (on 30.06.2015), the Republic of Macedonia has 2 070 226 inhabitants, and the population density is 80.5 inhabitants per km2.

As regards population ageing, in 2015, the participation of the young population (age group 0-14) in the total population was 16.7%, and the participation of the old population (age group 65 and over) was 12.8%.

In 2015, there were 23 260 births, of which 23 075 live births and 185 stillbirths.

The total fertility rate (TFR) in 2015 was 1.49 live births per woman.

According to the mothers’ age, in 2015, most (34.5%) were live births to mothers aged 25-29. The mean age of mothers for all live births was 28.7 years, while the mean age of mothers at first birth was 27.0 years.

Given that the largest number of live births (89.0%) in 2015 occurred within marriage, it can be said that the reduction of fertility is due to postponement of marriage to older age. The number of marriages registered in 2015 was 14 186, while the number of divorces was 2 200. The average age at first marriage is 26.2 years for bride and 29.0 for groom.

Changes in the age structure of the population have their impact on the number of deaths in the country. In 2015, there were 20 461 deaths, an increase of 3.8% compared to the previous year. The average age at death is 70.4 years for males and 75.1 years for females, which means that women live 4.7 years longer on average.

The most common causes of death are circulatory diseases with 58.4% of the total number of deaths, followed by neoplasms with 18.3%, endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases with 4.3%, etc.

As a result of the declining birth rate and the increasing rate of general mortality in the last 10 years, the rate of natural increase has dropped from 2.0‰ (per 1000 population) in 2005 to 1.3‰ in 2015.

In 2015, 8 050 persons changed their place of residence within the Republic of Macedonia, and net migration was 2 960 persons.

GOVERNMENT

Republic of Macedonia is a parliemantary representative democratic republic.

The head of government and of multi-party system is the Prime Minister.

The political system of the Republic of Macedonia consists of three branches: Ligislative, Executive and Judical.

Executive power is exercised by the government.  Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament.  The Judiciary is independent of the Executive and the Legislative.

The Constitution is the highest law of the country. The Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia is a codified constitution outlining the country’s system of government and basic human rights adopted in Macedonian Parliament on Nov. 17. 1991.

In 2001 it was announced that Macedonia had adopted amendments to the Constitution which enshrined 15 basic amendments and has granted rights to the country’s ethnic Albanian population, as part of the Ohrid Agreement.

The constitution stresses the importance of equality for all citizens. In article one, it is stated that “The Republic of Macedonia is a sovereign, independent, democratic and social state. The sovereignty of the Republic of Macedonia is indivisible, inalienable and nontransferable.” Other examples of articles state things such as the fact that Skopje is the capital of the country, and that the cyrillic alphabet is the official alphabet of the Macedonian language.

Judiciary power is exercised by courts, with the court system being headed by the Judicial Supreme Court, Constitutional Court and the Republican Judicial Council. The assembly appoints the judges.

The political institutions are constituted by the will of its citizens by secret ballot at direct and general elections. Its political system of parliamentary democracy was established with the Constitution of 1991, which stipulates the basic principles of democracy and guarantees democratic civil freedom.

The Elections for Representatives in the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia is held in October.

The Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia (Macedonian: Собрание на Република Македонија) or the Sobranie is the unicameral representative body of the citizens of the Republic of Macedonia; it is Macedonia’s sole legislature.

According to the Constitution, the Sobranie represents the people and is vested with legislative power. It can have between 120 and 140 MPs (currently 120), elected by proportional representation from 6 electoral districts, each contributing 20 MPs, and 3 reserved seats elected from the Macedonian diaspora which are awarded only if the voter turnout was sufficient. MPs are elected for a term of four years and cannot be re-elected.

The Sobranie (Assembly of The Republic of Macedonia) is presided over by a Speaker. Its organization and functioning are regulated by the Constitution and Rules of Procedure. The Assembly’s seat is in the nations capital of Skopje.

There are approximately 1.5 million voters registered in the General Electoral Roll for the election of Representatives in the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia in 2.973 polling stations. The voting for the representatives is conducted according to the list system.

Early parliamentary elections were held in Macedonia on 11 December 2016, having originally been planned for 24 April and later 5 June. A re-run was held on 25 December 2016 in Tearce and Gostivar  although the outcome was unchanged in Tearce, where the ruling VMRO-DPMNE maintained a small majority of the vote.

Although VPRO-DPMNE attempted to form a coalition with BDI, coalition talks broke down in late January 2017. After that, the SDSM pursued informal coalition talks with the BDI, though as of late February 2017, coalition talks were frozen on the usage of the Albanian language.

The institution of the Presidency of the modern Republic of Macedonia began after the Macedonian declaration of independence on 8 September 1991. Its first president was Kiro Gligorov, the oldest president in the world until his resignation in 1999.

The Macedonian presidency is largely a ceremonial post and the Prime Minister of Macedonia is the country’s leading political figure and de facto chief executive.

The president must be a citizen of the Republic of Macedonia, be over 40 years of age and have lived in Macedonia for at least ten of the previous fifteen years.

The power of the President is fairly limited with all other executive power being vested in what the Constitution describes as the Government, i.e., the Prime Minister and Ministers.

The current president of Macedonia is Gjorge Ivanov since 2009.

The current cabinet is a coalition of SDSM, the Democratic Union for Integration, the Socialist Party of Macedonia, and the Party for the Movement of Turks in Macedonia.

The members of the Cabinet of the Republic of Macedonia are chosen by the Prime Minister and approved by the national Parliament, however certain cabinet level positions are chosen by both President and Prime Minister, and approved by the Parliament.

Ministries of Republic of Macedonia are: Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ministry of Labor and Social Policy, Ministry of Finances, ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of local Self-Government  and  Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning.

INVESTMENT

In the absence of adequate domestic savings, foreign investment provides an important avenue for the development of Macedonia’s economy. Foreign direct investment represents about 3% of GDP. In 2016, net FDI flows to Macedonia slightly increased compared to 2015, amounting to EUR 196 million.

Austria and Hungary are the country’s main investors. Investments target mainly heavy industry (mining, metallurgy, oil refining), light industry (textiles, food), the construction sector (cement, brick, marble) and, more recently, the service sectors (banking, insurance, telephone).

Foreign Direct Investment in Macedonia increased by 19.15 EUR Million in February of 2017. Foreign Direct Investment in Macedonia averaged 31.37 EUR Million from 2003 until 2017, reaching an all time high of 344.80 EUR Million in November of 2006 and a record low of -61.71 EUR Million in July of 2010.

ENERGY

Coal and lignite account for around 80 percent of total electricity production, which was 514 241 GWh in 2012. The remainder comes from hydropower, with a small amount of solar. Domestic production accounts for 70.1 percent of Macedonia’s electricity consumption (2012), while imports account for 29.9 percent.

The main domestic generation facilities in Macedonia are the lignite-fired thermal power plants in Bitola and Oslomej (together 800 MW), with the three generation blocks at Bitola alone representing 675 MW. Both these generation facilities are owned and operated by the state-owned ELEM (ELEktrani na Makedonija).

Hydroelectric generation represents a total installed capacity amounting to 528 MW, out of which over 500 MW is run by ELEM. The state company is currently also developing a 50 MW wind farm project. Until September 2014, 16 turbines totalling a 36,8 MW capacity have been installed.

Macedonia is a significant lignite producer: 6.8 million tonnes in 2010 from the state-owned Suvodol and Oslomej surface mines, and from a number of smaller privately owned surface mines. The country also imports hard coal (158 000 tonnes in 2010) and lignite (54 000 tonnes).

Most coal and lignite is used for power generation – around 95 percent by energy content. The rest is used almost entirely by the steel industry, including MAKSTIL AD at its integrated steel works and ArcelorMittal’s steel mill in Skopje.

Like other countries in the region, has big plans for both hydropower and new lignite capacity. The most significant hydropower projects are the highly controversial Boskov Most and Lukovo Pole plants. The former has received conditional approval for financing by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

As well as renovating the Bitola power plant, ELEM plans to open a new mine at Mariovo and to construct a 300 MW thermal power plant there.

Macedonia has plenty of room for energy efficiency improvements. Electricity losses in 2012 were 14.5 percent of the gross national electricity consumption, and practices such as heating on electricity have contributed to increasing energy costs for many households.
